5 DIY Decor Projects For Your Yard

Spring is sneaking up on us and that means summer is just around the corner. It's time to get our backyards into shape! The backyard is a blank canvas for people into DIY, and if you're new to it, you will quickly learn how fun it is to create a little oasis. Here are 5 DIY decor projects for your backyard to give you inspiration.

Edible Garden

For cooks who want to garden but are reluctant to plant an entire bed of vegetables, an edible garden is a practical solution. Basically, it's a container garden in which you only plant vegetables that you eat and your best cookbooks call for. It can be as big or as small as you'd like. Put simply, it's a planter of your choice with many plants instead of just one. The important thing to remember is to choose plants that grow well together and require the same amount of light and soil.

Flagstone Path

Flagstone paths are easy projects and take just a few days to complete. They are a beautiful addition to the backyard and have the potential to be unique. Flagstone paths only require a simple sand base along with a few tools. If you have an idea of where you want your path, draw a sketch on paper and then do a rough outline with grass paint on your lawn. From there, you'll cut the sod, lay the sand and arrange your stones. It will take a bit of energy, but it will be worth it.

DIY Garden Bench

A fantastic addition to any garden is a garden bench. It can be used as an outdoor escape, a reading retreat or extra seating for cookouts. They can be as easy as cinder blocks connecting wood 2x4s or as elaborate and romantic as a covered bench with a garden trellis that surrounds you with greenery. Either way, you'll have a spot to sit when you want to enjoy the weather without leaving your property.

DIY Cabana

A cabana can dress up any backyard! The easiest way to make your own cabana is to fit together PVC pipe. If you've never worked with PVC pipe, it's a versatile material that can be used to make anything from a bed to an extravagant container garden. With PVC pipe, you can easily create a frame for a cabana following the design of a camping tent and using canvas tarps for the top and curtains. Kids can use it as a fort or mom and dad can use it to take a break from the sun on hot summer days.

Island Deck

Island decks are also called platform decks or floating decks. They are great because they don't require the same commitment or effort as conventional decks. An island deck also allows you a little bit more freedom because you can choose where it goes. If you want a spot in the sunshine, you can build in the sunniest spot in your yard; if you want it to be shaded, you can build it under a tree. If you don't like the idea of wood, you can always combine the idea of an island deck with the flagstone path to create a stone patio.
