Decorate With Cookbooks
Most of us have dozens of cookbooks around the house; some bought fresh off the press this month, and others passed down from great grandparents. A really fun way to liven up your kitchen decor is to actually decorate with these cookbooks, rather than leave them tucked away in the corner behind the spatulas. Use a combination of some lying down and others standing up, and even display one open to a recipe you love. This can be a great way to fill empty space, especially if you've got an older country-style kitchen, and can give family members something to look through while you're preparing the meal.
Add A New Color
There are really fun ways to update your kitchen with just a little splash of color. Paint the side of the fridge a bright red, or wallpaper your plain cabinets with a blue and white chevron pattern. You could also paint one wall a bright yellow or green to add a nice backdrop of color without re-doing the entire kitchen. You can also take old brightly patterned accent pillows from the living room and change the stuffing to make potholders, or cut a square of fabric and frame it. Try staggering 3 different patterns of the same color on a large wall.
Update Cabinet Pulls
It's relatively cheap and easy to update the knobs, handles and pulls for your drawers and cabinets, and the overall change in appearance can be dramatic. Check out various colors and styles, and if you've got quirky tastes, consider mixing and matching different designs.
Clean Off The Fridge
Of course it's great to have your kids' report cards, pictures and paintings all over the fridge, but it's also nice to shake things up every once in a while. Spruce them up with magnetic frames, change them out, or move them all to a corkboard in another part of the house. If you clear off the fridge completely, you will have a much cleaner feel to the kitchen, and you can always decorate the front or side with patterned wallpaper.
Utilize Glass Jars
Whether you're freezing soup or storing homemade granola, glass jars are a huge help for any kitchen. When it comes to organization, glass jars are more than just practical, they're decorative too! You actually may already be using them in your bathroom decor. In the kitchen, you can easily organize bulk items like rice, quinoa, oatmeal, or cereal in airtight glass canisters or large glass jars to keep them fresh. A large mason jar is also a great place to store trail mix, pasta, ice cream sundae toppings and small candies and treats for the kids (and you). When you convert your pantry to glass jars, you'll love the difference it makes to the entire look, feel, and organization.
Bring In The Greenery
One way to breathe a little life (literally) into your kitchen decor is by incorporating living plants, namely herbs and small vegetables, which can be grown indoors. Consider a small indoor herb garden with just 2-4 of your favorite herbs. Just think of how amazing your kitchen will smell! It's so easy to grow herbs, and they add a lot of life and color to your kitchen. Plus, then you'll have your favorite herbs on hand whenever you need them!
