6 Natural Solutions To Keep Your Bedroom Whites White

White sheets and comforters make everything seem cleaner and crisper, but it doesn't take long for those whites to get dingy. Here are 6 natural solutions to keep your bedroom whites white.

Steer Clear Of Bleach

Conventional wisdom points to bleach as the only way to get our whites their whitest, but it actually does just the opposite. Just like white t-shirts, your sheets will yellow when it's that close to our skin and body oils. Bleach reacts with proteins from our bodies and can darken sweat and oil stains. Washing polyester-cotton blends with bleach has a similar result.

Love Your Lemons

Lemon juice is an excellent bleaching agent for the laundry. The citric acid in the juice breaks down stains in fibers without toxic chemicals and destroying fibers in your clothes. It works fast when it's exposed to sunlight, but it bleaches whites well without sunlight. Adding a cup of lemon juice to your wash cycle along with regular detergent whitens whites naturally without the swimming pool scent.

Bravo For Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a mild alkali cleaner. It dissolves soil and oil to restore whites as well as remove odors as it boosts the strength of detergent. Add 1/2 cup to the wash cycle with your whites and your sheets and towels will come out of the laundry almost as white as when you bought them.

Vigorous Vinegar

Acetic acid in vinegar dissolves sugars, salts and oils that can stain clothes. It also gets rid of odor in laundry and softens fabrics. A little bit goes a long way to get your whites whiter -- you only need to add 1/2 cup with your detergent at the beginning of the cycle or by itself in the rinse cycle. The result is clean, soft, fresh-smelling laundry.

Bold Borax

Borax or sodium borate is a chemical compound found in nature. It's used to soften hard water and alter the pH level of water, which can determine how dingy your whites get. Use borax as a detergent booster to balance the pH of your water. It also softens and deodorizes fabrics for fresher and cleaner sheets than you would have with detergent alone and no residual chemical odors from bleach.

Sodium Percarbonate

Sodium Percarbonate is used in non-chlorine bleach. It comes in a powder form and when it's added to water, it restructures as hydrogen peroxide which breaks downs proteins that can stain clothes. Use about 2 tablespoons of sodium percarbonate with your detergent for a regular wash. For heavier stains use 4 tablespoons. Because it decomposes once it's combined with water, it's considered an environmentally friendly alternative to getting your laundry snow-white.

Chemical cleaners aren't always the best way to keep our homes clean and our laundry white. Sometimes nature has the best formula for the toughest cleaning projects.
