When people who suffer from allergies hear the word "spring" the word "pollen" comes to mind. Plants spread pollen to reproduce. It's made up of tiny grains that are circulated through the air and can land in someone's nose or throat. If that person has allergies, pollen can cause itchy eyes, a runny nose and sneezing. One way to avoid this is to stay inside, but when you want to enjoy nice weather you can reduce your exposure to pollen by washing your hands, clothes, baby toys, and anywhere pollen may have collected while you were outside. It also helps to keep windows and doors shut to prevent pollen from entering your home, and to check the pollen count before going outside for long periods.
Avoid Chemical Irritants
While trying to combat bacteria is a good idea to stay healthy and active, there are chemicals in soaps that can irritate allergies. Triclosan is the active ingredient in some anti-bacterial or anti-microbial soaps and some toothpastes. Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical found in some plastics, canned foods and cash register receipts, should also be avoided. Both triclosan and BPA have been linked to disruptions in the immune system and may cause allergy development.
Avoid Dust Mites
Dust mites are tiny, but they can do a lot of damage to people who are sensitive to them. They produce an irritant that can cause allergic reactions and asthma-like symptoms. The mites will be more active as the temperatures rise with the changing seasons because they thrive when it's warm and humid. To stay alive, they feed on dead skin cells, so they're commonly found in beds and soft surfaces like carpet. Dust mites are not a threat to those who are not allergic to them, but those who are might want to look into discount bedding as spring rolls around to stop the sneezing before it starts.
If you can't prevent allergies, you can certainly treat them. If you don't know what it is that's causing your allergies, an allergist can pinpoint the problem to make treatment simple. It may only be a matter of taking over-the-counter medications. But don't wait until you're miserable to get to the doctor or you may miss out on spring.
