Backyard Party: Natural Bug Repellents

Having a backyard bash in the summer is an activity we look forward to all year. But along with those warm summer nights come bugs that like to bite. Store-bought insect repellent is convenient, but it's usually sticky and often carries a heavy industrial fragrance. Fortunately, there are some organic solutions that can help keep bugs at bay. Here are a few natural bug repellents to try at your next cookout.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are a bug's enemy and are generally harmless to humans. They are effective in driving away pests in a pure state, but can be irritating if applied directly on the skin, particularly for young children. To use undiluted oil, simply apply a few drops to your socks or the collar of your shirt to keep bugs away. If you want your exposed skin protected, a properly diluted essential oil can be sprayed directly onto the skin.

There are different oils to defend you from different bugs. Peppermint, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and citronella are all good for repelling biting insects like mosquitoes, flies and ticks. Those oils mixed with witch hazel or vodka and water make an excellent blend for a spray. For a pleasant fragrance combine oils that pair well. If you have sensitive skin, add vegetable glycerin. It's, moisturizing and hypoallergenic, which makes it ideal for facial and body care products.

For sensitive skin, here's what you need for a 6-oz. spray bottle:
½ tsp. essential oil(s) of your choice
1 tbsp. vegetable glycerin
Distilled water

Combine oil and glycerin and add to spray bottle (or mix them in the bottle). Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Shake well before applying.

For regular repellent, combine in a 6-oz spray bottle:
3 oz. witch hazel
3 oz. distilled water
¼ tsp. essential oil(s) of your choice

Combine ingredients and add to spray bottle (or mix them in the bottle). Shake well before applying.

Herbs

Certain herbs are natural bug repellents, and if you have them growing in your garden you can make natural insect repellent very inexpensively. The benefits of making your own repellent are abundant: the fragrance is more pleasant than manufactured repellents and safe enough that you can spray them on your outdoor furniture or pet beds.

For dried herbs:
? cup herbs of your choice
2 cups water
2 cups witch hazel

In a saucepan, combine water and herbs. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and stir for 30 seconds. Remove from heat. Cover and let cool. Strain the herbs from the water. Mix with witch hazel and pour into a spray bottle.

For fresh herbs:
? cup herbs of your choice
2 cups water
2 cups unflavored vodka

In a saucepan, combine water and herbs. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and stir for 30 seconds. Remove from heat. Cover and let cool. Strain the herbs from the water. Mix with vodka and pour into a spray bottle.

Homemade natural insect repellents don't have industrial preservatives, so they should be stored carefully. Opaque bottles are best, and storing the mixtures in the refrigerator or a dark, cool cabinet keeps them potent longer.

There are so many elements that go into making a backyard party perfect -- and LTD Commodities can help! From mixing up the best natural insect repellents to grilling and cooking gadgets to impress your guests, shop LTD for great ideas and great savings.
