Checklist For Holiday Clean Up
Now that the holidays are over and you can finally take a breath, remember, it's not over until the decorations are put away and the house is clean. From storing ornaments to sweeping up the last bits of pine needles from the tree, here is a checklist to help you get started.
If you didn't put this stuff away before the holiday, these items should be stored out of the way before beginning on the big stuff. Just toss all the gift-wrapping materials in a large, long storage box and put it under your bed or in the attic. Remember to recycle any unwanted wrapping paper!
Outside Lights & Decorations
Outside is a good place to start on the big stuff. It is often the most work, but it will make you feel very accomplished when it's done. It makes a big difference - and the neighborhood will think you're so proactive! (P.S. Keep the evergreen wreath up until it dies - you're going to throw it out anyway!)
Ornaments & Tree Lights
Start by bringing down all the tree-related boxes. Carefully wrap, stack, and secure fragile ornaments in boxes and storage containers. Wrap the tree lights around flat cardboard or paper towel rolls and store neatly in a box or grocery bag. Half the work is done!
Walk around the house and grab any seasonal fabric items and run a load of laundry. Grab the dishtowels, tree skirt, tablecloths, and any seasonal fabric home accessories like hand towels and rugs. You can even wash your stockings! Make sure you set your washer to a gentle cycle with cool water.
Now it's time to gather the remaining decorations. Check for seasonal bathroom storage items like toothbrush holders, as well as holiday mirror and window clings in bedrooms, and seasonal candles throughout the home.
Excess Kitchen Dishware & Utensils
Do you use all those extra plates and utensils regularly? Do you want snowman salt & pepper shakers on your table year-round? What about the Santa Claus hot plates? Gather all of the decorative items and excess plates, silverware, and serving dishes. Wrap everything carefully and store out of the way!
If you've got lots of land for disposing of your tree, great. But if you're like most of us without that luxury, you should schedule a tree pick-up or organize a neighborhood tree-recycling day. Search your municipality's website for more options in your area.
Dusting & Sweeping
Now that all that stuff is out of the way - it's time to do a quick cleaning of the house! You can probably get by with a quick dusting, some sweeping, and a good vacuuming of the carpets. Schedule a carpet deep clean for a couple of weeks down the road if you have stubborn food and dirt stains.
Finally, if you've got lingering desserts, cookies, and other leftovers, either plan meals, freeze the leftovers, or package up the sweets to bring to the office. You can also make plates for the homeless, or give a neighbor that extra green bean casserole.
