Clever Hiding Places For Holiday Gifts
Kids are curious by nature, but when presents are involved, they go to any length to satisfy that curiosity. Around the holidays, if you want your gifts to be a surprise, you have to be extra imaginative when it comes to places to tuck them away. To help you out, we came up with a few clever hiding places for holiday gifts so your curious kids don't spoil the surprise.
No kid is afraid of dust bunnies, so hiding gifts under the bed may seem a bit obvious and amateur, but if you're inventive about it you can keep your secret safe until it's time to open presents. Think about what and how you store items under the bed and make them part of the hiding place; wrapped in a folded blanket, under the sheets and inside a box takes some effort to get to. If you want to take it a step further, try hiding the gifts under your kids' beds where you might store out-of-season clothing.
If you're planning to give your kids small items this year like a first cell phone, personalized jewelry, or a gift card, think of places you can bury it. Put it in a sealable plastic bag and nestle it in your flour or sugar canister. If you have bowls filled with potpourri scattered around the house, put the item underneath the dried fruit peels and flower petals. Though kids don't mind getting messy, digging in flour or rose petals is likely not very interesting to them.
In Plain Sight
Kids know you want to keep their holiday gifts a surprise so they look high and low for things covered and concealed -- but sometimes you don't need to be too sneaky to trick them. Think of places they tend to avoid like behind the cumin and cayenne in the spice cabinet or behind the casseroles in the freezer. Not all kitchen designs are good for hiding gifts, so the laundry room might be a good spot. They probably won't look in the hamper under dirty clothes, or in an empty box of detergent. Though kids like to get into a lot of things, you know the places they steer clear of.
Bait & Switch
Kids can be very sly when it comes to wrapped gifts, and tape does not deter them from trying to get a peek at what's inside! This requires equally crafty moves on your part. When you wrap your gifts, put the tags on them, but make them out for someone else. When they see a present is marked for Aunt Sally, they don't want to know what's inside. If they see the gift for Aunt Sally that's marked for them, you can bet they'll try to open it only to be disappointed -- but it makes their real gifts even more of a surprise when the big day arrives.
While You're Away...
When kids get home from school and you're still at work, they're almost guaranteed to go snooping in your bedroom. For smaller flat gifts, hide them between your comforter and top sheet as you make your bed in the morning. If you plan to give your daughter that party dress she's been eyeing, hang it on a hanger with one of your own dresses on top of it. For small toys and action figures, put them in coat pockets.
