Halloween:
Trick-Or-Treating-Alternatives

Candy and costumes is what Halloween is all about! Of course the kids quickly forget about wearing summer shorts to dress up to trick-or-treat for candy around the neighborhood, but trick-or-treating isn't always a reasonable activity: the weather isn't always perfect, the kids might not be the right age, or safety when walking around at night could be a concern. But there are ways to celebrate Halloween without going door-to-door for candy. Here are 5 alternatives to trick-or-treating.

Candy Hunt

Hunting for Halloween candy isn't quite the same as trick-or-treating, but it's just as fun. Drape the trees and bushes with fake spider webs, set up a pumpkin patch and hang a ghostly piņata, then sneak candies into obvious and not-so-obvious spots. Invite friends and neighbors with kids to join in the search for all things spooky and sweet. Hold the hunt before it gets dark so the little ones have a fair shot at finding their treats or, if you have older kids, a candy hunt in the dark makes the event more challenging.

Candy Carnival

Bring the party indoors with a candy carnival. In the garage, a church basement or a community center, plan a small Halloween festival for kids, their classmates and their friends. Set up mysterious stations with candy treasures as a reward for sticking their hands in a bowl of membrane (made of gelatin, of course) or getting past the wicked witch stationed at the entry bench. It doesn't have to be an elaborate set up, just enough to keep the kids busy and scared as they collect candy.

Costume Cavalcade

Hold a Halloween parade in the backyard for the neighborhood kids to show off their costumes. You can make it a competitive event and hand out prizes for the scariest costume, the cutest costume and most clever costume. To make sure no one is left out, have a title and prize for everyone who attends.

Halloween Bonfire

An ancient Halloween tradition is to hold a bonfire. Halloween is rooted in the Celtic celebration of Samhain which marks the beginning of the darker half of the year. Bonfires are set as a purification ritual, but holding a bonfire doesn't have to symbolize anything but a fall night to dress up and eat candy. Build a fire pit as your centerpiece and decorate around it with eerie embellishments and ghostly garnishments. Serve hot cider and cocoa to keep the kids warm while you tell ghost stories around the fire. It's not quite the same as trick-or-treating, but it is just as fun.

Haunted House

You don't have to host your own Halloween celebration; instead, leave the ominous ornaments to the professionals and take the kids to a haunted house. They'll get their fill of all things scary for the year and you can provide your own treats to get them their Halloween sugar fix.
