How To Make The Perfect Holiday Centerpiece
The centerpiece of your table can take a normal evening meal to the next level, as long as you do it right. Something too gaudy can destroy the entire ambiance, while the perfect blend of festive and classy can be an excellent conversation starter. Here are tips for making the perfect centerpiece for your holiday event.
Check The Height
This is something we all tend to overlook when we catch a glimpse of beautiful, tall lilies and sunflowers: they're just not practical. A centerpiece should never be of the height that blocks people's view or hampers conversation. Tall and super thin is okay, but short and squat is even safer.
Consider The Material
While we all love beautiful flowers, it's important to remember that some people have allergies, which means a floral centerpiece could really ruin their experience. Unless you know for a fact that none of your guests (or their significant others and kids) have any allergies, try to use things like candles, marbles, wood, or glass instead of flowers. Going along the same line as avoiding flowers, if possible, avoid scents completely when planning your centerpiece. You want your guests to smell the Christmas tree and the fabulous food, not a lavender potpourri in the center of the table. The one exception is pinecones. Their scent is associated with Christmas, and it fades a lot as they age; so older ones are better and much less intrusive.
Beware Of Size
Many holiday tables are incredibly crowded, what with plates and bowls and glasses cluttering each space and serving dishes going around and around. We always love traditional Christmas decorations ideas and centerpiece pictures you find online, but sometimes they forget that most people have to squish a few extra chairs around an already-cramped table. If you're going to have a crowded table this year, make sure you consider space issues when you plan the size of your centerpiece. Bigger isn't always better.
Try to think outside the box here. You never know, you might already have the home accessories scattered around your house that will come together to make the perfect centerpiece. We're thinking flat marbles and gems in a few little candle votives, or Christmas tree branches tied with red ribbon. The sky is the limit!
