1. The Theme
Easter is celebrated in the spring and makes a fun theme for a baby shower. Think of cute bunnies and chicks for the decorations. Yellow and white make a great gender-neutral color scheme. Or go with "April Showers Bring May Flowers" as the theme. Decorate with a giant umbrella hanging over the gift table and upside down mini umbrellas holding mints or nuts for each guest. Expand on the theme with blossoms overflowing from vases as table centerpieces.
2. The Invitations
Sticking to your theme, select store-bought invitations, or if you're crafty, create your own. Diaper pins, lace, even balloons can turn a ho-hum invitation into a memento. Make sure your crafting closet is stocked with supplies, such as gel pens, stencils and papers. Send out invitations 4-6 weeks before the event so guests can mark their calendars.
3. The Refreshments
Choose food and drink items that go with the theme. For an Easter-themed shower, serve egg salad sandwiches, deviled eggs or other chicken and egg dishes. Use bunny and chick cookie cutters to bake batches of sugar cookies. Place bowls of colorful jelly beans around on the tables.
4. The Gifts
Choose items such as adorable baby bloomers, newborn toys, rattle socks and booties. You might want to suggest to guests that they replace the greeting card usually attached to a present with a children's book to start building baby's library.
5. The Games
- Play Match the Socks by challenging guests to be the fastest to match the pairs in a pile of 20 to 30 baby socks. The winner goes home with a prize, and the expectant mother goes home with all the socks.
- Start the game of Baby Things by giving each guest a sheet of paper with the alphabet written in the left margin. The object of the game is to write down the name of a baby thing that starts with each letter of the alphabet.
- In the Diapering Game, guests take turns trying to pin a diaper on a balloon without breaking it.
6. The Favors
Sending guests home with a party favor will help them remember the event fondly. Fill a treat bag with goodies, or give them a tin of mints personalized with baby's family name. If the gender is known, consider favors in pink or blue, such as purse-sized notepads, nail polish, or hand sanitizer.
