Spring Cleaning: Tips For Sorting Your Spices

It's that time of year when it's not quite warm enough to be outside for ten hours of the day, but it's sunny enough to remind us of all the outdoor fun we'll be having in the next few months. That means it's the perfect temperature outside to keep us inside to do some organizing, starting in the kitchen. We all love to stock up on items for our storage cabinets, but sometimes our spices can get unruly. Here's a list of tips for sorting your spices.

Purge

Herbs and spices can be pricey, so we tend to hang on to jars and containers of spices for years. Most spices don't go bad, but they do lose flavor and potency with time. Start going through your spices and tossing the ones you don't remember using or buying, and keep the ones you know you need frequently. You can replace the spices you throw out when you need them again.

Convenient Containers

Not all brands of spices are sold at every market and not every brand of spices come in the same containers. Mixing and matching those spices are great for recipes, but it can make a mess of your cabinets. Try putting all of your spices in matching containers. It works in the same way using all of the same hangers in your closet does: it creates uniformity in the real estate it takes up so everything fits together and no space is wasted.

Create Space

Because spices are kept in oddly small containers, you may be able to find space for your spices outside your cupboards. Magnets and refrigerators can be part of your solution. You can mount magnets on the bottom of shallow tins so you can stick them on your refrigerator door, turning it into a spice rack. If your refrigerator isn't an option, you can try mounting a magnetic strip above your counter where you can execute the same idea in a different spot.

Find Space

If you don't have a lot of space in your kitchen, start looking for nooks and crannies that can be filled like the gap between the refrigerator and the counter or wall. There are slim racks and storage solutions to fit in under-utilized spaces. This frees up space in your cupboards for other bigger items that don't need a permanent spot.

Spice Drawer

If you have a lot of spices, you may want to transfer your collection from the cabinet to a drawer. With shallow, uniform containers, your spices can be tucked away and easily accessed for any meal. Whether your containers have windows or they're labeled, the spices are presented like a selection at a store to make cooking each meal less of a hassle and less of a mess.
