Winter Wonderland:

Furnace Maintenance To Keep Your Home Cozy

Winter chills always seem to take us by surprise. Fortunately, we can escape it by retreating to our homes where we are shielded from arctic blasts and can snuggle up comfortably. But to make our homes warm we have a to give our furnaces a little bit of love. Here are 5 furnace maintenance tips to keep your home cozy.

Check The Filter

This incredibly easy step is a key factor in determining the quality of air you breathe while cooped up inside. Your air filter should be changed once a month. There are 90-day filters, but most furnace repair men will steer you toward the 30 day filters. Changing out your filter regularly keeps your heating costs manageable as well as extends the life of your equipment. It's also a good idea to stock up on furnace filters during the summer months.

Check The Vents

Keeping your wall and floor vents clear of dust, pet hair and small food scraps keeps the air circulating. If there's any clogging or obstruction, it strains the furnace and causes a variance in temperature throughout your home. To avoid this problem, vacuum your vents often to prevent blockage and keep them clear of your children's discovery toys, electronics and pet toys.

  • Check The Exhaust Flue

This large pipe leading from your furnace to the outside prevents combustible gases from entering your home. Check for any holes and make sure the interior is clear before firing up your furnace. Small holes are easily patched with foil tape but the pipe needs replacing if it's corroded. To check the interior of the flue, unscrew the cap next to the furnace and look through to the other side. If you notice debris, clear it out and then replace the cap.

  • Check For Flammables

This seems like an obvious point but it often goes overlooked. Keep your furnace area clear of any items that easily catch fire. This is especially true if your furnace is in a small room or laundry room. Make sure common household items -- paints, aerosols, motorized yard tools, baseball shirts -- are kept a safe distance away.

  • Check The Thermostat

Calibrating your thermostat is the easiest way to make sure you're getting an accurate temperature reading. Fluctuations lead to inconsistent temperatures, which lead people to constantly change the settings. This continuous activity causes your system to work harder. If the thermostat isn't checked on to guarantee accuracy, the furnace will be less effective and repairs will be necessary.

Maintaining your furnace is an important part of winter safety. Here at LTD, we have everything you need to keep your family cozy, comfortable and safe all season long.
